There are a lot of reasons you can get depressed. You can lose a loved one, a beloved pet, or your job. You can get divorced, be physically or emotionally abused, or be under a lot of emotional or financial stress. Some people get depressed when they retire, because it is a major lifestyle change. Some people are just depressed because they are lonely.
No matter what the reason for the depression, whether it is chronic or acute, aromatherapy may help. What can you use to help your depression? Room diffusers, air fresheners/room sprays, massage oils, and skin and hair care products can all be used to release energizing oils that can help uplift your mood. And don’t forget the bath and shower. Bath oils and salts can also help relax your muscles. As for the shower, try putting a couple of drops on the back of the tub (where it won’t come in contact with your skin). The heat and steam from the shower will give you an aromatic shower. If you are traveling or at work, you can do something as simple as put a couple of drops of an essential oil on a cotton ball and carry it around with you.
What types of essential oils should you look for? Roman chamomile is a calming scent that many believe is a natural sedative. Lavender has been used for years to help calm the mind and relieve stress. Clary sage is also used by aromatherapists to help restore emotional equilibrium. If you like a more citrus smell, give mandarin a try. Sandalwood is another ancient scent that has been used to relieve depression.
Of course, you will need to check with your physician because aromatherapy is generally viewed as a complementary health modality, i.e., it can be used to compliment traditional and alternative depression medications.
