Aromatic Packaging for Food and Beverage Products

A company by the name of ScentSational Technologies has created aromatic packaging for: cereal and snack bags, microwaveable trays, bread bags, disposable coffee cup lids, and various other food and drink products. The packaging, of products using this technology, smells like its contents. Two of Scentsational Technologies’ claims are that their packaging may improve product shelf life and that it may cover up unpleasant odors or tastes. A couple of scents they have created are roasted garlic and tomato-basil. I imagine a substantial quantity of products, with these fragrances, would probably make your cabinets smell like a pizza parlor.

Scentsational Technologies developed CompelAroma Marketing. They predict customers will buy products, with their packaging, according to the following scenario. The sight and smell will attract the consumer to the manufacturer’s product. During the preparation of the product, the scent will entice the consumer. The enhanced aroma improves upon the products flavor. The consumer will remember this on future shopping trips, thus generating repeated sales for the manufacturer.

A company called Aroma Water, LLC, uses Scentsational Technologies’ aromatic caps, for their water bottles. They market a product called Aroma Water. It’s water, that’s all. It doesn’t contain additives or preservatives because the fragrance is enclosed in capsules inside the cap of the bottle. Eventually, the aroma will permeate the capsules and give the water a specific flavor, like lemon. This way is healthier for you because nothing has been added to the water.

I haven’t come across any products that have this technology. Personally, I don’t think it would be a good idea if I did. This type of packaging could cause a shopper to be impulsive, particularly when running errands on an empty stomach. The purpose of this special packaging is to increase manufacturers’ sales. Yet, choosing products with this technology may be a healthier alternative for consumers, since fragrance is the only addition to the product.
