Though Mickey Mouse originally debuted in 1928, he has consistantly remained an international icon of not only fun and happiness, but also art. Disney themed art pieces continue to be some of the most sought after pieces of art around the globe. As such, it’s only fitting that Disney take it’s place among the towering buildings were Andy Warhol once painted his own pop rendition of the Mouse that started it all.
Opening on February 24th with a gala champagne reception, the gallery will feature high quality pieces that include original paintings, figurines and other objects d’arte. While guests peruse the art featured at the gallery opening, three artists will be on hand including Eric Robinson, who will be hosting the event and displaying some of his original art. Trevor Carlton and Stephen Reis will be participating in “live art” during the evening while guests look on.
One blank canvas will be transformed into a work of art as guests watch and, when finished, will be displayed in the gallery’s Fifth Avenue window. Not only will original art be featured, however, but limited edition collector’s pieces that many collectors can only find in such a gallery.
For those who have visited the Walt Disney World Resort, you may have been to an Art of Disney Gallery. There are two located in the WDW Resort and they are definitely a treat for the eyes. Whether you are interested in original art or collector’s pieces such as those from Lenox or even if you’re just looking to browse, you’re sure to find something to please. During my last visit to WDW’s Art of Disney Gallery, there were pieces that featured characters from, of course, Mickey Mouse to Pirates of the Caribbean’s Jack Sparrow.
The new Art of Disney Gallery in New York City is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th St. in Manhattan and will officially open at 7 p.m. on February 24th.
