In the blog I wrote the other day about humility and asking God for help, I wrote, referring to Heavenly Father: “He is there, just waiting for you to humble yourself enough to ask for help.” Why is it that He waits for us to ask Him for help? If He knows everything, why doesn’t He know we need help and just give it?
In contemplating this question, many reasons sprang to mind.
1. The greatest tool He gave us to use here in our mortal lives is free agency. He does not force any man to heaven, and He does not force us to accept His help. If He were to step in every time He saw us falter, He would be violating the law of free agency. When we ask Him for help, we are exercising our free agency in choosing His assistance.
2. When we ask for His help, we are acknowledging that we aren’t able to handle it alone, which is humility. Far too often, we blunder around in darkness, thinking that we are supposed to figure it all out for ourselves, when in reality, if we would simply put our pride down and ask Him, He will flip on the light switch or, at the very least, give us a hand to hold while we walk toward the end of the maze.
3. If He did step in as soon as trouble appeared on our horizon, what would we ever learn? If we were shielded and protected from all life’s heartaches, there would be no reason for us to be here in the first place. We learn as we make mistakes. We receive education through our suffering. If we never suffered, rather than encountering life in all its shades and facets, we’d be bouncing along, living a bubble gum existence, but then only meriting the smallest rewards in Heaven.
It’s a sad but true fact that pain is an essential part of earth life. It’s a wonderful, miraculous fact that we don’t have to endure it alone. Ask for His help. Humble yourself enough to put aside your pride and admit that you need Him, and He will be there in ways you can’t even imagine.
