If your family car is anything like mine, a murky shade of charcoal grey with complimentary streaks of black and white has replaced your vehicle’s original color and sheen. Until mid-January, the frigid winter weather was a no-show here in the Northeast. But the curtain has officially closed on those springtime days of winter. We have since seen a few snowfalls, and I use that term extremely liberally as accumulation has not once topped an inch. The storms were hardly worth celebrating as they blew into town Santa-style, while we were snug in our beds. And while no two of the pearly white flakes are exactly alike, snowfalls and the subsequent salt and slush all have an identical effect on my beautiful cayenne pepper red Subaru Forester.
Most of the snow storms we are fortunate enough to receive in my part of the world are quickly chased by a light rain or a warmth that melts the clean sheets of white and replaces all of that beauty with an ash covered landscape that makes me think I live inside my Weber grill.
While that side-of-the-road sludge is a terrible eyesore there is a fun activity that just screams out to be had as a result of it: CAR WASH!
Since washing the car out on the driveway in the winter in most parts of the country is certifiably insane, consider taking the car and the kids through a car wash. All that gray crud will be washed away and you will emerge triumphantly on the other side with a crystal clean vehicle. At the same time, your children will absolutely love the 5-10 minute ride watching gigantic bottlebrushes scrub the sides of the car, huge rubber flaps slap the front of the car silly and splashes of soapy water cascade down on all sides. It is like a drive-thru water park for the whole family, only you don’t need to diet beforehand – no bathing suit is required!
