Even if you aren’t the bride, groom or bridesmaid, attending a wedding can be pricey. There is the cost of the dress, tux or suit, the accessories, the transportation costs, the hotel stay, and of course, the gift. If you are actually in the wedding, those costs can go up even more.
Here are some ways to save on the cost of attending a wedding.
Clothing
For a fancy formal wedding, consider renting your gown or tux instead of buying one. For a fraction of the cost you can look stunning. Accessories can also be rented.
Alternatively, women can choose one simple dress and then accessorize it differently each time, adding a jacket, a hat, jewelry, etc. (For more ideas about upscale frugal clothing, click here.)
You can also look for previously worn items, even shoes!
Plan Ahead for Travel
As soon as you get your invitation, or even get the date and place from the bride, do your research and book your flight or other travel arrangements. Travel can account for one of the biggest wedding expenses, so saving here can greatly reduce the costs of attending a wedding.
Also look into sharing travel with others who will also be attending. Renting a car together or getting a group discount for train travel may be a great option. Also, find out if the hotel will give a discount for multiple rooms. Don’t assume that the bride and groom will take care of this for you or you may be disappointed.
Start Budgeting
If you are in the season where many of your friends and family will be having weddings, you’ll want to start budgeting now. How can this save? By having the cash available, you won’t need to rely on credit cards and the interest that they generate!
Offer to Contribute as Your Gift
If you have a particular talent or skill, or the time, you can offer your services for the wedding in lieu of a gift. For example, you could make the centerpieces or the favors, make the cake or be the photographer, depending on your experience and skills.
