Attending Church

Do you hate Sundays because you come home from church feeling overwhelmed by everything you should be doing, but just aren’t? Or are just worn out from chasing your children around the chapel? There are Sundays when you may be wondering why it is so important to go to church. It is important that you make the Sabbath a day of rest and church a chance to have yourself strengthened spiritually and not drained. Here are a few things you can do to help make the Sabbath and church attendance more meaningful.

1) Take the time to prepare yourself for church on Saturday night and Sunday morning. On Sunday play church or classical music in the background. Find all of your church supplies the night before and lay them out. Speak kindly to your children and spouse.

2) Prepare yourself spiritually for the day. You can do this by reading the scriptures and finding time to pray quietly. You should pray that you will feel the spirit while you are at church. You can also prepare yourself to take the Sacrament, which is the most important reason that we attend, church each week. Additionally help to prepare your children to take the Sacrament.

3) If you feel that there are areas that you need to improve on in your life, choose just one small goal to focus on. You cannot change everything at once. By choosing one, you will be moving forward, but you should not feel overwhelmed by the goal. Each week set a new goal, and record the goal and your progress in your journal.

4) If it is a challenge to watch your children during Sacrament meeting, try to find things that encourage reverence, but also entertain your children. The activities that you take to church will change, as your children grow older. Drawing and coloring are excellent easy and quiet activities.
