Best-selling Christian author Max Lucado first came on to the scene for me with his children’s book “You are Special.” It was read aloud in church, it was talked about in the bookstore, and suddenly the name “Max Lucado” was everywhere. What I didn’t realize, and what many didn’t realize, was that Max was not new. It’s we who were new to the knowledge of him.
Max was born in 1955 in Texas, the youngest of four. He went to Abilene Christian University with every intention of being a lawyer, but as he took the Bible course that was required at the college, he changed his mind and entered the ministry. That’s just as well; I don’t think he’s sneaky enough to be a good lawyer.
He graduated with his degree and moved to Miami to minister to his first church. As part of the job, he wrote a regular column for the church’s newsletter, and these articles were later put together and published in book form, Max’s first, entitled “On the Anvil.” He then married Denalyn and moved to Brazil to become a missionary. When Max’s father died five years later, he returned to be close to his mother, and he began a ministry at the Oak Hills Church of Christ in San Antonio, where he is to this day as senior minister.
“On the Anvil” was the first of many, many books by this heart-touching author. He has written more than 50 books and has 28 million copies in print, more titles than anyone else in his industry. His genres run from children’s books up to devotional material, for which he has won the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year three times. He has been named “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today and is one of the most positive examples of a Christian in the focus of our media. In spite of all this fame and success, Max says that his greatest accomplishment was finding a one-in-a-million wife and having three unbelievable daughters.
You can learn more about Max Lucado at his website, and you can also get information on how to receive full-length CDs of his weekly sermons by calling 1-800-822-WORD. His books are available at nearly every bookstore, or you can find them at his online store.
