Random Pet News

I read that pets are likely to be just as overweight as their owners. Boy oh boy how I wish that were true in this house because my two are solid muscle. The Chihuahua Rescue and Transport is holding their annual fundraiser on February 11th. According to their press release, “The festival will include a silent auction, a Chi-Idol Contest, a Valentine’s photo opportunity with human and dog and live entertainment. The silent auction closes at 7 p.m. and the music by the Cornerstone Band will continue until 10 p.m.” Visit http:// www.Chihuahua-rescue.org for more information. In New Hampshire, a … Continue reading

Do Not Feed Your Cat

A couple of months ago I was at dinner at an acquaintance’s house. Much to my horror, they had two very large cats. I took a deep breath and decided that I could handle it if I just ignored them. This became very difficult because as we sat down to dinner, the cats sat down as well- at the table. I was appalled- why were the cats sitting at the table? I lost my appetite because I couldn’t help but wonder if the cats ate off the same plates as the humans. Cats are great I guess but if you … Continue reading

Pets that Slither

One of my cousins used to have pet snakes. He was a strange boy. Every time I went over his house I would be afraid to leave the sight of his mother for fear that he would put the snake on me. Nevertheless snakes are common pets. But before you rush out to get one, you should be quite familiar with what it takes to have one. Unlike dogs and cats, some snakes prefer live food. They eat rodents, frogs, insects, or other snakes – some of these things can be bought frozen and stored however some snakes will only … Continue reading

Leave the Wild in the Wild

The fact that I don’t like cats is not a secret. But big cats are different. I love leopards, cheetahs, and lynxes. I used to love that show “Big Cat Diaries”. When I was little I would always say that one day I would have a pet leopard. Now that I am an adult, I don’t understand why anyone would think that they could keep a non-domesticated cat as a pet. Perhaps they want to feel like they have something unique and interesting or maybe they just like the way the cats look. But that still doesn’t make it ok. … Continue reading

A Collection Of Pets

I’ll admit that I don’t like to throw anything away. It doesn’t matter if I haven’t used it in 5 years because you never can be too sure about when you are going to need a broken fly swatter. That was a joke, (kind of), but it made me think about all the animals that are treated as collections. Scientifically they are known as animal hoarders but most people call them “that crazy dog (or cat) lady”. Randall Lockwood of the Humane Society says, “Hoarding is very often a symptom of a greater mental illness, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder. For … Continue reading

Silly Dogs

Remember my post about Designer Dogs and how much they annoy me? Well here’s a funny take on that phenomenon. Dog Breeds That Didn’t Make It Deerhound + Terrier Derriere, a dog that’s true to the end Spitz + Chow Chow Spitz-Chow, a dog that throws up a lot Kerry Blue Terrier + Skye Terrier Blue Skye, a dog for visionaries Great Pyrenees + Dachshund Pyradachs, a puzzling breed Pekingese + Lhasa Apso Peekasso, an abstract dog Irish Water Spaniel + English Springer Spaniel Irish Springer, a dog fresh and clean as a whistle Labrador Retriever + Curly Coated Retriever … Continue reading

The Pug

Pugs are strange-looking dogs. They are so cute, but they are ugly too. They kind of look like piglets with their wrinkled face, curly tail and short body. These dogs come in 4 colors: black, apricot, silver and fawn. They have a short coat that is very easy to groom. Please note that just because a dog has a short coat it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to brush it! Pugs tend to shed a lot. Also, since small dog breeds are prone to teeth problems you want to make sure you brush their teeth frequently. Health wise since … Continue reading

Scoop That Poop!

I never understood why people don’t clean up after their dogs. Just because your dogs use the bathroom outside, it doesn’t mean that you should just leave the poop there. Not only would it be disgusting if someone happened to step in it and drag it into their house, but also it’s a health risk for every other dog who happens to walk on that path. According to the BBC, in the UK hundreds of people were fined after their dogs eliminated on the pavement. I think this is a step in the right direction. I remember a few months … Continue reading

Till Death Do Us Part?

People love their pets. As a pet owner I fully understand this but there comes a time when you have to ask yourself, “am I taking this too far?” Apparently some people in Chicago are being buried with their pets. I guess if you want to get technical you could say that Egyptians did the same thing so what is so strange; but this is 2006! After I read this, I immediately wondered if the people had it written in their will that the pet was to be put down as soon as the owner died. But that’s not how … Continue reading

Snickers & Reeses Favorites

Favorite Dog Treats: Canine Carryouts – These dog treats are the greatest. Reeses gives them two paws up. With flavors like beef & cheese and grilled chicken, dogs go crazy. From my point of view, the best thing about these treats is that they are cheap! They range from $0.99-$1.89 per bag. They are also extremely easy to travel with. Liver Biscotti – I have a hard time finding this treat but Snickers loves them. I found out about them because the pet supply store used to always give us free samples. This treat is also very healthy. From the … Continue reading
