Picture.com Photo Site

I should really start taking notes on how I find things, since I just found a great site but forgot how. Anyway, the site is Picture.com, and it was created by the International Library of Photography as a place for amateur photographers to share their work and be recognized. I solved the two photo puzzles for the puzzle contest that they have each day, and I am hoping that I won the $50 prize. We’ll see. In the meantime, check out the site and see what you think. There is a photo contest, too, with a $10,000 prize. Sign up … Continue reading

More Photo Hosting and Sharing Sites

I reviewed some photo sharing sites in previous posts, and I would like to let you know about some other ones that I have found. One of the newest sites I have found is dotphoto.com, and you can see for yourself what they have to offer here. They offer free membership, 30 FREE 4 x 6 prints when you sign up, free software for uploading photos, photo websites, unique photo gifts and books, and you can even sell your photos through them. With Webshots, you can create an online album of your photos, and upload pictures to the site for … Continue reading

Bracketing for Proper Exposure

Earlier, in a post about fireworks photography, and also in a post about windows, I mentioned briefly the subject of bracketing. Tracy also wrote a post in her photo glossary series about it. I would like to further expand on the topic, to be sure that my readers understand what we are talking about. In the old days, before digital and auto everything cameras, you used to have to take pictures on slide film. Then you would send it out in the mail (remember the mail?), to a processing place, and they would send you your slides back. Then you … Continue reading

Still Life Photography

Last week, we discussed advertising photography, and how it is one of the highest paying fields in photography. This week I want to talk about another segment of advertising photography, still lifes. Still life might make you think about things such as a flower in a vase, or a basket of apples on a kitchen table. These are examples of still lifes, but what about those still lifes that are used to sell a product? When I think of still lifes, I think of those Absolut vodka ads. That may be because I saw a show on how they make … Continue reading

Advertising Photography

In recent posts, I started to explore different areas of photography, such as press photography. Now, let’s discuss one of the most lucrative but competitive fields of photography. I’m talking about the field of advertising and design photography. You can earn more in advertising photography than in any other phase of photographic work, which means that the field is also highly competitive. But if you have the talent and persistence that is required, the rewards can be enormous. Advertising agencies use a huge amount of photographs in their advertising campaigns, and have lots of money in their photography budgets. Demand … Continue reading

Press Photography/ Photojournalism

I was at my daughter’s last swim meet of the season a few weeks ago, and was watching the local newspaper photographer get some shots of the meet. He has been doing this a long time, as was evidenced by his Nikon D2H camera with a long, expensive lens. As he was taking a break from the action and having lunch, we talked about swimming and how you can’t get a decent candid photo of my daughter, as she is always posing. Which leads me to today’s topic: Press Photography Press photography is similar to wedding photography, in that you … Continue reading

German Photo Products and Field Trips

In honor of my German foreign exchange student, I am writing today about German photography product manufacturers. The first one that comes to mind is Agfa. Agfa produces film, darkroom chemicals, minilab spare parts, and has a wholesale division. Or, should I say, they used to do all these things. As of last year, the company is being liquidated. Imaging Solutions, AG is taking over the spare parts and chemicals division, A&O is taking over the wholesale division, and The Lupus Imaging & Media Ltd. & Co. KG, a newly founded internationally operating trading company has taken over the main … Continue reading

New Photo/Video Sharing Site

I just got an email from a reader that sent me information on a new photo and video sharing service. This service is very easy to use, and is similar to using email. It is called Pickle, and it seems not only easy to use, but convenient. I signed up for a free account to try it out before I suggested it to my loyal readers. I uploaded a photo of Lucy, and it was automatically resized and added to my inbox. You can then create what are known as pickle boxes (like photo albums), and control who has access … Continue reading
