Dealing with Difficult Customers

Until I opened my own company, I didn’t have much experience dealing with customers who were not happy. Before becoming a business owner I taught school, and before that I had a few odd jobs waiting tables. Handling an unhappy customer is much different than trying to handle someone who is unhappy with the job that you have done. This is especially personal when you are the owner of the company and you feel as though the job that you are doing is not what the customer initially wanted. Dealing with customers can be very difficult, especially when they are … Continue reading

Need Career Advice? Find a Mentor

Mentors are excellent resources for those who are just starting out in a field or for those who are hoping to increase, improve or learn new skills. I believe so strongly that we can learn from people who do things better than we do them, or who have been doing them longer than we have. The latter doesn’t mean that someone who has been on the job longer than us is in fact better than us; but many times people who have had more experience know the best way to do a job, or they can offer shortcuts that work … Continue reading

Independent Contractor? You Just Might Want to Hire Out Help

My best friend’s husband works as an independent contractor. While he works for several of the same companies on a regular basis, he also takes on odd jobs here and there. Working in the construction field in Florida keeps him fairly busy, so he is always on one job site or the other. The problem that he, and many people who own small businesses, is having is that while he does his job well (so well, in fact, that he built the house in which he and my best friend live practically by himself) is that he has difficulty doing … Continue reading

Thinking of Switching Careers? Ask Yourself Why First!

So I just posted about a newsletter I received that talked about the idea of switching jobs after being in a field for a while, and the potential financial issues that can come about with such a change. I guess the first thing that you should really do before embarking on a career change is ask yourself why you want to make that switch. This seems like such a basic question, but I wonder how many people don’t really consider why they want to switch from what they are doing to what they think that they want to do before … Continue reading

Changing Careers? Don’t Forget to do Some Thorough Research First

I received a newsletter in my email inbox tonight that got me to thinking about changing careers. I’ve written about this before. I know a lot of people that are my age (ahem, heading toward that forty mark) who have burned out on their careers and are now interested in making some changes. At age twenty-five, this may not be such a big deal. If you’re a college graduate you probably just graduated, have not invested a ton of time on the job and have some flexibility when it comes to pay, benefits and the other necessities that at this … Continue reading

When it is Time for a Vacation

Okay, I will admit it: Lately I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed. I have taken on numerous tasks that, while beneficial to myself and to my company, are also piling up on my shoulders like heavy bricks. I’m beginning to feel quite bogged down. For one thing, I have a lot of jobs right now. Most are in the latter stages of completion, but getting them there-in limited amounts of working time since I also stay at home with my two young daughters-has been spastic at best. I’ve worked until midnight and gotten up at five AM so many times … Continue reading

Community Colleges Offer Great Alternatives to Furthering Education

I know that many people, when considering returning to school to update skills, look into four year universities. I’m sure that the idea behind this is the university offers courses that have been designed for specific subject matters, such as English Lit or Special Education. Yet I think that we sometimes overlook smaller community colleges. These campuses offer great classes in a diverse range of coursework. The classes cost less, and if you are considering going back for skill related learning only, and not for a graduate degree, chances are a community college campus could meet your needs just as … Continue reading

Make Sure You Like What You Do if You Are Opening a Business

Recently I read an article in which a woman business owner mentioned that while some people may be able to run a profitable and successful business by working just a few hours a week, most can’t. I’m one that can’t. Lately it seems that I do nothing BUT work. I wake, I work. I put the kids to bed for naps, I work. I have a free moment, I work. If you are thinking about opening a business, you must make sure of two things: That you love what you are considering doing and that you are okay with working … Continue reading

Are You Checked Out?

I read an article in a magazine today that said most studies show that nearly 70% of employees are disengaged! I thought that this number was fairly high until I thought of a few of my past positions. Truth is, I can recall sitting at one of my old desks (won’t say which one) reading through job position openings that were available in other companies because I was so disengaged with my employment. I believe becoming disengaged is quite easy when we become familiar with a job. In my opinion, this often happens when we don’t have enough ‘new’ stuff … Continue reading

Does Weight Matter in a Job?

I recently read a wonderful private message from a regular reader who said that she had graduated in the finance field and was beginning to look for employment. However, over the past few years, she had gained some weight (happens to the best of us during college, doesn’t it?!) She was wondering if the weight gain would effect her chances for employment. This question seems to be popular lately. So popular, in fact, that it showed up in the form of an article in one of my favorite magazines, Pink. (If you haven’t read Pink and you are a woman … Continue reading
