Choosing a Great Wedding Photographer

I’ve heard over and over that one of the most important things you choose when getting married (other than your spouse) is your photographer. I’ve talked to people who have loved their wedding photos, and those who nearly cry every time they see them because they hate them so badly. I don’t think anyone wants to be in that last boat. Even when the photos turn out well, you may experience frustration with the photographer’s schedule, policies, or other quirks. There’s a lot to think about before your big day. So when you’re choosing your photographer, here are a few … Continue reading

More Lessons from My Mother

In my last blog entry, I recounted a few of the things I’ve learned from my fabulous mom. I’ve learned so much, though, that I felt I needed to add a few more that have shaped my LDS views on motherhood, selflessness, and church service. I learned how to be a mother from Mom (skills that I’ll soon be using). I learned what nurturing is at the hand of my mother. She’s the glue that makes our family function and every member feel fulfilled and loved. As the second oldest child of seven (and the oldest at home from age … Continue reading

Organizing Your Photos: Digital Photos

The awesome thing about digital cameras is that you don’t waste any money on film. The scary thing about digital cameras is that you take hundreds of photos, which you either end up leaving on your memory card for ages or dumping onto your computer in batches (large or small) that may or may not have automatically named file folders and images. These images may live their lives with such descriptive names such as IMG_0468 living in the folder Roll 101. Yes, this is a real photo on my computer. It’s a lovely photo of my dad’s prize car, but … Continue reading

Lessons from My Mother

I want to share a little bit about what I’ve learned about being and LDS woman and about motherhood from my mother since we’re so close to Mother’s Day. As Jane Austen wrote in Persuasion, she is “too modest for the world in general to be aware of half her accomplishments,” especially since some of her most important accomplishments have taken place inside the quiet workings of her own home. She has been my example for years; here are just a few of the things she’s taught me. I’ve learned to trust her opinions. Mom is real. She’s genuine, caring, … Continue reading

Organizing Your Photos: Printed Photos

If you’re anything like me, you still have a shoebox full of printed photos. They may be old photos, or they may be new depending on your camera preference, but one thing is sure: they’re not doing anyone any good sitting in a shoebox. So let’s get organized! (Organization is one of my favorite things, by the way.) I’ve stopped printing many of my photos. With the switch to digital, I now find myself printing only the ones that I have a specific purpose for. So while I’m not compounding my shoebox problem, I haven’t taken the time to remedy … Continue reading

Seeking Higher Ground

Have you seen the Mormon Messages that appear on the LDS.org web site and on YouTube? I have recently become a fan of these short messages that are so uplifting, spiritually helpful, and well done. And they’re only a couple of minutes each, so it’s easy to fit one into your day. Don’t you love the Internet for the cool things it makes possible? Today I watched one entitled Seek the Higher Ground. In it, Elder Cook talks about how our lives can be enriched and we can do all the Lord needs us to do when we seek higher … Continue reading

Taking Scrapbook-worthy Photos

Scrapbooking is a hugely popular hobby. And it’s rewarding to come away from your creative space with something that both preserves memories and was fun to create. While I enjoy scrapbooking, one of the challenges I face is finding scrapbook-worthy photos. I spend a lot of time taking photos of nature and architecture. Trees, flowers, symmetry, lines, and other abstract things. I don’t take a lot of time to photograph people. And while a few photos of some of these other things are nice in a scrapbook, they’re not what you generally are looking for in a scrapbook. I’m not … Continue reading

Choosing Photos for a Birth Announcement

If you were going to send out a wedding announcement, you certainly wouldn’t take your engagement photos right after rolling out of bed or when you’re suffering from a newly developed rash. You’d get ready, making sure to show your best side, right? Why wouldn’t you do the same thing for a baby announcement? Many parents are eager to send off baby announcements full of photos of their new little cutie as soon as they get out of the hospital. The long wait is over, you’re excited and overjoyed at the new little life you’re holding in your arms, and, … Continue reading

A Lesson in Repentance

Today I was sitting at home doing some Saturday chores when there came a knock on my door. I wasn’t expecting anyone, so I went to the door not knowing what to expect. I opened the door, and a man and boy from my ward stood on my doorstep. I greeted them and asked how I could help, and the answer startled me. They were there to tell me that the boy and his cousin had damaged our rock wall a few days earlier. My husband had come home from work that day to find pieces of the rock wall … Continue reading

Baby’s First Photo Shoot

As I’m about to have my first baby, I keep thinking about her first photo shoot and I’ve realized I have several questions to answer before she’s ready for her debut. You may want to consider these questions as well before scheduling or taking baby’s first photo shoot. First off, what are you going to use the photos for? Are you looking for a big print to hang on your wall, or are you shooting for lots of little prints you can hand out to everyone you know? Or in this digital age, you may be simply planning on putting … Continue reading
