Dozed and Confused

I don’t know what’s going on, but I have to say something. Is it just me, or are more and more folks falling asleep at church? I mean, okay, I’ve heard the jokes for years across all denominations, but until recently, I don’t think I’ve seen so many folks dozing as I have in the past month or two. Let me tell you the story of the first talk I ever gave in church. I hadn’t been a member for more than nine months, maybe less than that. I had recently moved, so I didn’t know a lot of people. … Continue reading

Putting Your Goodies to Use

Last week, we talked a little bit about some downloads available at the LDS website. The simplest and most obvious uses include saving them onto your computer, playing them on your MP3 player, or burning them onto a CD in your car. However, I’d like to suggest a couple of alternate uses. Traveling magazines on CDs for your kids – Recently, with all of the traveling we do, I’ve been getting books on CD for my children to listen to in the car. I was amazed last week to realize that the Friend was downloadable. Since we already subscribe to … Continue reading

Signs You’re A Sick Mormon Mom

I spent most of last week in bed, sick as a dog. Of course, this gave me plenty of time to consider clues that you’re an ill Latter-day Saint (assuming, of course, you don’t realize it while you are puking in the toilet). Okay, that’s a lie – last week, I didn’t really think about the blog. But I’ve had time to think since then, and here are just a few signs! 1. You’ve found yet another good reason to have kids over a wide age range. Now your oldest kids can take care of the younger ones while you … Continue reading

LDS.org Downloadable Goodies

If you’ve been reading my blogs for more than three minutes, you already know that I’m something of a techongeek. I’d like to share another great download spot, in case you have missed it – the church’s website at www.lds.org. I think I’ve mentioned in the past that you can download the scriptures from the church, but that’s just the tip of the iceburg – albeit, a great tip! First, let me show you how to locate this wealth of information. It is amazingly simple. Type in the church’s web address. On the top left side of the page, you’ll … Continue reading

Don’t Settle

I recently got back in touch with the friend of mine who introduced me to the church. He lamented that, at the ripe old age of 28, he was still single. Of course, as someone who married in my early twenties, I don’t have a lot of experience on the subject, but like most interfering folks, I do have some advice. We belong to a very family-centric church. Back when I was single, I had a friend who chose to attend the local family ward rather than the singles ward. Though she enjoyed it, she felt a lot of pressure … Continue reading

Sunday Review: Paul’s Testimony

I know this blog is about a week late, but I had to share. Last Sunday was one of the few Sundays I neglected to read the Gospel Doctrine lesson in advance, so of course I was asked to fill in as last minute substitute. I don’t know how well the Spirit I felt translated to the class, but I felt the Holy Ghost stronger than I have felt during the lesson in awhile. The lesson for the week was Acts 1-5. In that lesson, Paul bears his testimony not once but twice. The first group he testifies to was … Continue reading

Visiting Teaching Interviews

As a newly called Relief Society Presidency in our branch, we were told that one of the responsibilities we had was to hold visiting teaching interviews. This was somewhat startling to most of us, as I don’t think any of the four of us had actually ever been interviewed regarding our visiting teaching. This leads me to believe that this is a somewhat neglected activity. Yet I would encourage any of you responsible for visiting teaching to consider taking the steps necessary to ensure such interviews are performed. Although we were told that these interviews could be done over the … Continue reading

LDS Family Week in Review: July 22-28

From pioneers to the scriptures to helping our youth, this week has brought a great deal of variety. I hope you will find something to help you in your spiritual walk. Monday, July 23rd: In Pray for Comfort, we talked about praying throughout our trials. In How Do You Know When You’ve Lost the Spirit?, we talk about the slow and gradual loss of the Holy Ghost. And in General Conference: “To the Aaronic Priesthood: Preparing for the Decade of Decision,” we reviewed Elder Robert D. Hales talk to the young men of the church. Tuesday, July 24th: In Dinner … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Look to God and Live”

In October 1978, Elder Carlos E. Asay of the Quorum of the Seventy gave a talk entitled “Look to God and Live.” In this talk, he described the importance of keeping our gaze focused on Christ. In doing so, we, too, might look to our Father in Heaven and receive eternal life. Elder Asay provides various stories, in and out of the scriptures. He begins by speaking of a man who had sunk low. Involved in drinking and in drugs, this man always kept his head low, focused on the feet of those around him. Said Elder Asay, “this alcoholic … Continue reading

LDS Acronyms

Last week, we talked about the secret language Latter-day Saints are slowly developing. This week, I’d like to continue my status as Bendict Arnold and share a few acronyms that might crop up in Mormon conversations or blogs. Soon, you, too, will be able to communicate with Latter-day Saints. LDS – The most obvious of acronyms, LDS stands for “Latter-day Saint”, which is, in itself, a condensed version of the church’s true name, “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint.” However, if you identify a member of the church as a Latter-day Saint, 99.99% of the people you talk … Continue reading
