Avoiding Awkward Holiday Moments

Have you ever had an awkward holiday moment? Maybe the kids have caught you sneaking Santa’s cookies, or maybe something worse… You’ve heard the song about Mommy kissin’ Santa Clause, right? I know a woman who got busted doing just that. She didn’t know what to say. The kids later told Dad what they saw and then it was up to him to figure out an answer. I think they are still trying to explain it…

Another song that might make things a little strange is “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer!” It’s meant in good fun, but if you’re mother-in-law happens to catch you enthusiastically singing along, it could spell trouble. Our kids made up another version one year when one of them lost a tooth on Christmas Eve. As we joked about the Tooth Fairy showing up at the same time as Santa, one of the girls was inspired to start singing, Tooth Fairy got run over by a reindeer. I’m pretty sure their grandparents liked that version better.

What happens if you’re caught under the mistletoe with someone other than your spouse? The fact that you are married is of course an undeniable reason for avoiding an unwanted kiss, but that may not make it any less awkward to fend off. Watch out for surreptitiously displayed mistletoe!

Then there’s the, “Oh, I have a little something for you,” moment, where you try to think of an excuse for not also having a little something for the person handing you a gift. The best solution for this one is to pick up just a few “generic” gift items and wrap them up. Keep a few items in your vehicle and a few at home. Then, you can simply say, “Just a minute, I have a gift for you too.” Small boxes of candy, picture frame key chains, pretty ornaments, and desktop calendars are great choices when you need a little something.
