Avoiding Heat Stroke and Dehydration while Vacationing

Sometimes, people want a trip that requires a lot of physical exertion, or perhaps they want to travel some place warm. While this is great, it increases the risk of heat stroke and/or dehydration. Therefore, when planning your next vacation to some hot spot, take time to learn how to keep you and your family healthy.

Many family vacations include time around the swimming pool or beach. Obviously, spending time in the hot sun for long hours can create serious dangers. While heat exhaustion is bad enough, remember the heat stroke and even dehydration can kill. The most important thing is to do a little research about your destination. Find out the average daily temperatures, humidity rates, and try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, generally from noon to 3:00 p.m.

Most importantly, make sure you drink lots of water or power drinks while in the sun or exerting a lot of physical energy. This way, lost body fluids are quickly replaced. Keep in mind that a person will lose fluids from urination, perspiration, respiration, and defecation. Therefore, it is essential that you keep your body pumped with proper fluids so heat stroke and dehydration are avoided. A great rule is that if you find you are playing harder than normal, you need to drink more. However, if you are urinating more than usual or find that you have diarrhea, you also need to increase fluid intake.

When in the sun, be sure everyone protects the head by wearing hats and protect the skin by wearing a high SPF sun block. Then, if you expect to participate in some type of outdoor activity that will require tremendous effort, you might consider taking a salt tablet. However, for this, you want to be sure you always follow the instructions carefully in that the intake of too much salt could actually cause dehydration.

If your vacation involves sightseeing, then cotton clothing would be best. Cotton is not only lightweight, but also breathable, meaning your body will be able to cool of better. Then, although you want to have fun while on vacation and not miss a thing, do not push yourself too hard. When temperatures are hot, take a break, and find something to do in the shade or enjoy, find an indoor activity, or take a city tour where you can simply sit back and relax.

With good planning and a little bit of research, you and your family could travel to any hot destination without the worry of illness. After all, the location has much to do with the heat you feel. For instance, visiting a place in higher altitude could enhance the effects of heat stroke and dehydration. By knowing how to prepare and not taking chances, you could have an amazing beach vacation.
