Do you find your spices often escape from their proper places and go off and form lives of their own either somewhere in the back of your cabinet or in places unknown? Is your kitchen counter so cluttered that you can barely find it? Well, help is on the way. Here are some tips…ready or not!
Some Storage Help
Arrange things so that everything is kept as close as possible to where you are going to need it the most. Under one’s nose is the perfect place for some things and not such a good idea for others. Only you and your nose know what’s right for your home. Items like salt, flour, sugar, pasta etc, should be stored in attractive glass containers either on your counter or on open shelves. This way, boxes go in the trash instead of cluttering up the counter.
Small Annoying Things
Matches, toothpicks and the like are very irritating as they always show up, especially when you are not looking for them. Keep them in a nice little basket out of the way on a top shelf instead of having them fill up and cram your kitchen drawers. If you own a bamboo steamer, it can also serve as a storage bin for onions and potatoes. The airflow will give a longer life to vegetables as well.
In-Wall Pantry
A space saving method for storing canned and bottled goods is in the wall. (It’s not off the wall at all, as you might think at first.) Get a handy person to cut out a 3-foot high piece of wallboard between two of your wall studs and install some 4” shelves.
Bench Storage
Consider benches instead of chairs the next time you buy a kitchen set. They take up less space and many are made with a built in storage area under the seat. This is a great place to store linens, napkins, guests and relatives that are simply too annoying to sit at the table with everyone else.
