I need to preface this article with the fact that just a few weeks ago, I saw this babies in the news story on the television show Grey’s Anatomy. The story wasn’t exactly the same as the one I am going to share with you here, but the tale did feature a young woman with two wombs, carrying two children and the babies were conceived at different times – so the trick was to deliver the infant that was ready to be born and protect the one that needed another six weeks of gestation.
Babies in the News
In September, a woman in Great Britain gave birth to triplets. While the birth of multiples is hardly an every day event, this is not what made the birth so remarkable. Delivered 7 weeks early, the triplets are a pair of identical twin girls from one womb and a single girl from another – yes, the mother Hannah Kersey had two wombs.
The delivery was by caesarean section and the babies were doing extremely well. According to news reports, there doesn’t seem to be any other similar account where three babies were born from two different wombs. There are risks to a multiple pregnancy and according to the experts the risks are increased when the circumstances are abnormal.
Doing Well
The babies were doing very well and though they were delivered prematurely and had to be in the hospital for nine weeks, they continued to mature and grow stronger. Apparently two wombs or partially joined wombs are not as rare as one might think. One woman in a thousand has them. Pregnancy is possible, but it usually results in a premature birth. In the last fifty years – there have only been 70 cases of dual pregnancies recorded with a pregnancy in each womb – and no records of triplets.
Whether she was extremely lucky or extremely blessed, our best wishes go out to Miss Kersey, her partner and her three beautiful girls. It’s a beautiful thing to show that yes, you can do that on television and even better – you can do it in real life.
