Baby Skin Problems

baby This morning, as I was caressing the cheek of my youngest child, I was in awe at how soft it was. The expression soft as a baby’s bottom is said for a reason. Baby skin is amazingly smooth and glowing. But that doesn’t mean that baby skin isn’t prone to problems.

Here is a quick guide to common baby skin problems.

Diaper Rash

Diaper rash is caused when irritants and wetness come in contact with your baby’s skin. It can usually be cured by using a diaper cream at every changing, especially at night, and, or by letting the baby’s bottom “air out” between changes. If you notice red bumps that have a definite border, this could be a rash caused by yeast and would require a call to the pediatrician.

Baby Acne

Baby acne usually occurs shortly after birth and may appear as either white or red bumps on your baby’s face. The cause is usually hormonal activity that takes place. Don’t scrub at the spots, because this could cause even more irritation. This condition should clear up on it’s own, but in some cases the baby acne can become infected from scratching or over scrubbing.

Chapped Skin

Chapped skin can occur anywhere, but it usually appears on a baby’s face and neck area, usually under the nose and on the chin, or in the folds of the neck. It can be caused by a runny nose, drooling or even chilly weather. Keep the area as clean and dry as you possibly can. You can also use a light diaper cream to protect the skin, although keep it away from the eyes or mouth. Check the skin to make sure that it doesn’t worsen or become infected.
