Back To School Fashion Trends

I ran over to the mall this morning to get a new battery for my watch. BIG mistake. I would guess that every intermediate and high school student in the county was there buying new outfits to wear to the first day of school tomorrow.

Growing up I went to Catholic school, so needless to say, my summers weren’t spent doing the mall crawl searching for the perfect back to school ensemble. Rather, my mom spent the better half of the summer sewing school uniforms (navy blue slacks and skirts paired with white shirts and navy blue block knot ties). The one and only trip to the mall we would take before school started was to buy new shoes–standard brown loafers. (And people wonder why I dress the way I do.)

These days students are in a league all their own. According to leading fashion magazines, the hot look for fall 2007 is vintage. Other hot trends include street fashion paired with accessories to create a personal style. I even saw one report that insisted that students will be wearing ’80s-inspired looks. Shocking! Who knew I would be hip without trying.

I’m not sure I buy that particular prediction; however I did note a number of trends that didn’t seem too offensive, including:

BLAZERS FOR GIRLS

Boy blazers for girls are reportedly one of the must-have items this fall. Most have been customized by adding patches and trim to the collar so they don’t look as though they were pilfered from a brother’s closet. Also, fashion experts say accessories (think berets, belts and glittery bags) help to offset boyish blazers.

KNITWEAR DRESS

Knitwear is also a hot trend this season—-especially in the form of dresses, which act as a basis for an entire outfit. A soft knit dress can be dressed up with a crisp button down shirt, and a vintage belt. Or, throw on a pair of solid tights and a blazer to combine two of fall’s hottest looks.

NEW JEANS

Parents Rejoice! Fall brings with it a new jean shape — a wide leg and a higher waist. (Basically, the opposite of the once popular low-riders. Three cheers.) Your teen can pair it with a graphic T-shirt to make it cool and personal.
