Back-to-School Fun for Toddlers

Jealously among siblings often rears its ugly head during the back-to-school season. Younger kids may feel left out when they see their older brothers and sisters getting a slew of new items and anxiously counting down the days until the new school year begins.

If you have younger kids at home losing the war against the green-eyed monster, then consider carving out time to spend with them working on the following back-to-school projects:

EGG CARTON SCHOOL BUS

Materials:

One egg carton

Yellow paint or markers

2 lids from milk jugs (for wheels)

Black marker

Crayons or markers

Glue

Directions:

Cut the lid off of the egg carton.

Paint the lid yellow.

When paint is dried, glue on wheels.

Have kids draw windows on bus with black marker and then use crayons or other colored markers to draw people in the windows.

Write “SCHOOL” along the top of the bus.

Allow child to embellish bus with other accessories (buttons, glitter glue, stickers, etc.) if desired.

BACK TO SCHOOL WAND

Materials:

White construction paper

Paint

Empty toilet paper rolls

Glitter glue

Streamers

Directions:

Have toddlers paint toilet paper rolls with their favorite color paint.

Allow rolls to dry thoroughly.

Use glitter glue to draw on strips on white construction paper.

When glitter glue is dry staple each strip inside the tube.

glue a construction paper star to the end of the “wand.”

HOMEMADE BOWLING

This is a cheap and easy activity to pass the time with your toddler while waiting for the bus to pick up or drop off your older school-aged kids.

Materials:

10 empty 2 liter soda bottles

Small lightweight plastic ball

A little water or sand

Directions:

Fill the bottles with a bit of water or sand and set them up like bowling pins. Have toddler roll ball and see how many “pins” he can knock down.
