Back to School Left Over Piles of Paperwork

The back-to-school rush should be just about wrapped-up by now, Thank Goodness! All of the proper forms have been completed, signed and hopefully returned to the school. If you are anything like I am, there was one pile of papers which had to be returned and another pile of optional things to consider, like joining the PTA or purchasing Student Accident & Health Insurance.

It’s just the right thing to go ahead and pay the dues to join the PTA (Parent Teacher Association) sometimes called the PTO for the Parent Teacher Organization. Paying the dues builds the organization and offers some great supports for our schools and our children attending them. There may be a few other groups, organizations or clubs parents or school children might be interested in joining so I am making sure I double check all those papers in my optional pile.

Applications for the free or reduced lunch program, and information about community support services either need to be taken care of, or round-filed. Usually, within this pile is the information about the Student Accident & Health Insurance plans. These are not free programs, and many people don’t consider this insurance because there is a premium and for the maximum coverage the premium may appear to be rather large.

When I consider the cost of health insurance, it’s easy for me to recognize why so many people are in favor of free or social medical programs. I am all for finding methods to lower medical costs, and keep the cost of insurance reasonable. The primary reasons health insurance is so expensive, in my opinion, is because not everyone is willing to pay for their own insurance. If everyone purchased medical and health insurance the costs would be lower for everyone and services would be driven by the market.

Any proposed free medical program offered nationally would result in raised taxes. Someplace, somehow the funding for medical care always comes out of our own pockets one way or another. The more educated and deliberate we are about the insurance choices we make the more control we have over the quality of care we receive. Consider the recent announcement in Great Britain that woman should have their babies at home with the assistance of a mid-wife who will make the decisions if the hospital is needed. This is a fantastic option for those mother’s whom want to have their baby at home, and who are safe to do so. This was how it was done 100 years ago.

The truth is that they are having difficulties providing quality care for everyone and the citizens are very much paying the price in the way of increased taxes, fees and less access to medical care. The truth is we will pay a premium for any medical insurance or for that matter medical care we receive. The good thing is that right now each American has the right to make their own choice and pay the premiums up front or pay later?

I am looking forward to writing several Blogs about some of these “optional insurance” plans many people are offered, yet fail to recognize as one possible protection in the even of loss or damage, illness or injury. Stay tuned for the Next Blog which will go into some more details about the Student Accident & Health Insurance plans.
