A.k.a.: The shopping trip from hell.
Besides backpacks one of the most popular and expensive back-to-school items is a new pair of shoes. Even if your child wears a uniform to school, you will likely have to purchase him a new pair of stomps.
So what can cash-strapped parents do to ensure that they are getting a durable and fashionable pair of shoes for their kids without breaking the bank?
Here are some tips:
Size: Don’t turn down the shoe store employee when she asks to measure your child’s foot. Younger children are constantly growing and wearing slippers and other non-confining footwear over the summer can change the size and shape of your child’s foot. A knowledgeable shoe store employee will also be able to tell you if your son or daughter has a narrow or wide foot or one with low arches or no arches. Once you figure out your child’s foot style and size, you can find an appropriate shoe.
Socks: Bring along the type of socks your child will be wearing to school, so he or she can try the shoes on with the appropriate sock.
Sneakers: When shopping for sneakers look for ones that have a leather, flexible sole and be sure that there is no slippage in the heel. Also, look for a sneaker with leather across the toe and the sides. Shoes featuring all mesh will not withstand the elements as well.
Timing: Timing is key when shopping with kids. Don’t go shoe shopping with a hungry of tired child. Finding the right shoe takes time. If your child is well fed and well rested he will be more likely to have a better attitude trying on multiple pairs of shoes. Also, try to go shoe shopping at the end of the day when your child’s feet are slightly larger then in the morning. If you pick out shoes at the end of the day, you’ll ensure a more comfortable fit.
Finally, you can extend the life of your child’s sneakers by coating them with water and stain repellant spray.
