Back to school means crazy mornings, but that doesn’t also mean that you can’t serve your kids a hot breakfast. Although we do have our share of cereal mornings, I enjoy knowing that I got them out the door with something warm and filling most of the time. It also helps me control the ingredients and cut down on the preservatives and other additives that go into pre-prepared breakfast food.
One of the tools that I use to help serve a hot breakfast despite a busy morning is my crockpot. I can either fill it with ingredients in the quite part of the day before the chaos begins. If you aren’t a morning person, you can simply add your ingredients into the crock the night before and then insert it into the heating element and turn it on when you get up. There are even some recipes that will cook all night for you and be ready in the morning.
Another tool I use to prepare a hot breakfast on a busy morning is my freezer. I know that sounds strange, but what I do is to cook some hot breakfast items in advance and then freeze them for a quick reheat on those busy school mornings. If I happen to be busy myself, my kids can grab something out of the freezer and then put it in the toaster oven or the microwave to prepare their own hot breakfast.
Some of our favorite items to stock in the freezer include egg and cheese sandwiches on English muffins, buttermilk waffles, chocolate chip pancakes and a variety of muffins. Individual breakfast bowls or breakfast burritos are another easy to make, easy to heat and easy to eat option. There are many different recipes out there to try.
Getting out the door with a hot breakfast doesn’t have to be hard. With a little advanced planning, it will be easier than pouring that bowl of cold cereal, and less expensive, too.
