As I begin to write, I feel like a broken record. It seems like every other blog I write is diaper rash this, diaper rash that. Still, diaper rashes are a major topic in the world of parents of babies. If there’s something you think about more than your baby’s poop or butt, please, enlighten me, because I can’t think of something that’s on my mind more often than that.
But, I digress. I’m writing today to share with you the wonders of Bag Balm. I’d heard about it before, I know moms who use it, but I had never tried it on my own baby.
Bag Balm is a medicated ointment originally designed to keep the udders (“bags”) of cows soft and healthy. It has a consistency similar to Vaseline, but has a slight medicated smell.
Before this weekend, I thought I had diaper rashes figured out. My daughter has sensitive skin, and we’ve figured out a number of remedies that keep her rashes at bay. This weekend’s rash was a completely different story.
In about one hour’s time, my baby’s butt went from being clear to having a rash with what looked like open sores that were oozing clear liquid. Every time I changed my baby’s diaper, she cried. I felt so bad for her. I thought it was a yeast rash, so I applied the Nystatin ointment, but it did nothing. I tried the Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Diaper Rash Cream that has never failed is before. It failed us this time. I called my mom (aren’t mothers great?), and she suggested putting plastic on the floor, putting a blanket on top of that, and letting my baby sit naked on it for awhile. She also suggested using something called Bag Balm.
I was ready to try anything. As my sweetie was pooping and peeing away on blanket after blanket, I gave my husband a phone call, asking him to pick up Bag Balm from our local drugstore. When it was time for bed, we coated our daughter’s butt with a thick layer of the yellow ointment, put a diaper on her, and said lots of prayers.
The next morning, her rash wasn’t gone, but it looked ton better – like a mild diaper rash, instead of those awful open sores. By the end of that day, it was virtually gone.
I’m proud to announce that I have officially joined the ranks of mothers singing the praises of Bag Balm.
