Elina is a hero in the land of Fairytopia. She saved all the fairies from Laverna’s evil plan to kidnap the guardian fairies and use their powers to become the most powerful fairy of all in the movie “Fairytopia,” and in “Fairytopia Mermaidia,” she became a mermaid to save her friend Prince Nalu from another one of Laverna’s schemes. But not all the other fairies appreciate her reputation, as she’s about to discover in “The Magic of the Rainbow.”
The fairy guardians are each choosing an apprentice to learn how to do the dance of spring, a crucial ritual in Fairytopia. If the dance is not done correctly, it can spell disaster for the land and its inhabitants. Azura, Elina’s guardian friend, has chosen her to come to Fairy School at the Crystal Palace to learn this ritual, and when Elina arrives, she finds herself mocked and ridiculed by the other apprentices.
Laverna may be a toad (no, really – I’m not calling her names. She got turned into a toad) but she still has a trick or two up her little toady sleeves. She tricks Elina into turning her back into a human, and then she transforms herself into the look-alike of Sunburst, one of the other apprentices. (The woman just never gives up, does she?) But Elina manages to save the day, yet again, proving herself to truly be a hero and not just a fluke.
With all the merchandising that goes on surrounding a Barbie movie, I’m starting to wonder if all these Fairytopia movies aren’t just a great money-making gimmick. But little girls just love them, especially Bibble, the puff-ball. Personally, I can’t stand him, but I guess that means I’m getting old.
If your daughter is a Barbie fan, she’ll probably enjoy this movie. It does have some good moments; I just think the whole Barbie fairy thing has been done to death.
This movie is not rated.
