Barbie in The Magic of Pegasus (2005)

barbAt last, we see Barbie show some temper! Starring as Princess Annika in “The Magic of Pegasus,” she chafes at her parents’ instruction that she is to stay inside the castle. She even throws a tantrum, telling her parents that they are ruining her life. Just an hour or so later, after sneaking out of the castle to go ice skating down in the village, she begins to understand why her parents were keeping such a close eye on her – a wizard named Wenlock swoops down and tries to carry her off. She is saved just in time by a beautiful pink Pegasus which takes her up into the sky, but she hears Wenlock’s warning ringing in her ears – if she does not marry him in three days’ time, her parents and her village will be forever cursed. With a wave of his funky-looking wand, Wenlock turns them all into stone.

Annika flies up into the clouds on the back of her Pegasus, wondering what she will do. The Pegasus takes her up to the Kingdom in the Clouds, a magical place full of beauty and light. The enchantress there tells her that if she can make a Wand of Light, she will be able to break the spell Wenlock has cast. And there is one more surprise – the Pegasus that saved Annika is really her sister, Brietta, turned into the winged creature by Wenlock some years before. If they can break Wenlock’s spell, Brietta will turn back into a human.

With all the incentive in the world to succeed, Annika goes on her quest, riding on Brietta and taking with her a baby polar bear named Shiver, who really got on my nerves by the end of the film. If that bear had just stayed put and done what she was told, everything would have gone a lot smoother. But, oh well.

Along their way, they meet up with Aidan, a young man with a chip on his shoulder. With the promise of reward, he agrees to help Annika find the pieces that she needs to make the wand. Together they are able to create the magic needed and overthrow Wenlock’s wicked ways.

I didn’t enjoy this movie as much as I did some of the other Barbie movies, but I appreciated the ice skating scenes throughout and it was good to see Barbie finally show some personality.
