I found this quite amusing, yet it may also prove valuable for brides in search of designer bridal gowns at a fraction of their normal prices. Filene’s Basement offers a bi-annual wedding gown sale, and has since 1947, which is affectionately known as “The Running of the Brides.”
Since it is a one-day sale, brides must arrive early and be prepared to shop until they drop. It sounds like chaos, as women waiting in line for the doors to open burst into the store, scooping up as many dresses as they can hold onto, and trying them on right there amongst other shoppers (it pays to wear something you can slip on and off easily, with a bathing suit underneath). You might also want to bring someone with you to help hold onto your things (for more tips on surviving the sale, click HERE and scroll down).
The store’s buyers shop near and far for gorgeous dresses, which are then marked down from their price tags of thousands of dollars to around $500.00, and sometimes less.
The sale at the Maryland location is already over, but others are still to come. In Boston, the sale is scheduled for August 18, in Chicago, it will be on July 24, and in Washington, D.C., the brides will run on August 4. Visit the Filene’s Basement site for specific store locations or for more information on the Bridal Event, or call 888) 843-8474. You can try the local number 617) 348-7000, if you are in the Burlington, Massachusetts area.
Filene’s Basement even accepts check (with identification) and every major credit card. Return policies vary by store, but require receipt as well as intact price tags on gowns. Returns can be made from 14 – 30 days, depending on location, so check with specific stores regarding returns.
It may sound a little crazy, but it also sounds like a great way to save a bundle on a fabulous wedding gown!
