Do you know what you need to have in your home to be prepared in the event of an emergency? If you want to help protect yourself and your family, having a basic emergency supply kit is essential. We have been talking about the various supplies that need to go into your kit. Let’s continue with our supply list.
Dust mask. A dusk mask will help filter out air that has been contaminated by dust, debris and some germs and bacteria. It will help you and your family breath in poor conditions. Store three masks per family member to be safe.
Plastic sheeting. The plastic sheeting can be used to seal your home from outside contaminates if necessary. Most homes have lots of air leaks through the doors and windows. The plastic sheeting can help you shelter in place.
Duct tape. This versatile addition can be used for many things in the event of an emergency. Beside securing objects and helping to create make shift tools, duct tape can be used to secure your plastic sheeting in place.
Personal sanitation items. You may find yourself without water or working sanitary facilities. Stock up on moist towelettes, plastic garbage bags, and twist ties. Also consider any feminine products that might be needed. Babies will need disposable diapers and wipes.
Basic tools. Add a wrench and a pair of pliers to your kit. These tools can be invaluable if you need to shut of the utilities in your home, such as the water or the gas. A can opener is absolutely necessary, if you have included canned foods in your food kit. Scissors are valuable for opening packaging, cutting bandages, etc.
Local maps. Finally, add some local maps to your kit. These can come in handy if you need to find shelter or a central location to meet. Even if you know your area, the chaos and confusion of an emergency can cause confusion. You may also need to get around closed roads.
