There are so many accidents that occur in the bath, so it makes sense to prepare your home in such a way as to avoid these accidents, which in some cases can be really tragic. Bath safety is especially important in home with children or seniors, the two groups that are often affected by accidents in the bath. Here are some ways that you can be prepared to keep everyone safe.
Install grab bars in bathtubs and showers to provide solid support. This will help prevent falls. People often grab for towel racks and soap dishes, either to get in and out of the bath on in the case of a slip. This can be bad, because these items are usually not strong enough to support a person, especially if he or she slips.
Use non-slip safety mats on the floor of the bathtub and shower. You can also attach safety strips or cut outs made specifically for this purpose. You also want to make sure to clean up spills, whether they are water spills outside of the tub or shampoo, conditioner or soap spills that could make things slippery.
Never leave young children alone in the tub and always remain alert and within arms reach. Even a few inches of water in the tub could drown a small child. Don’t have older children supervise younger ones, as children can become easily distracted or may not have enough strength or ability to rescue a drowning child.
If you have babies or toddler in the home, make sure that there are safety locks on toilets and doorknob covers to the bathroom to prevent children from entering a bathroom without supervision. Never leave water standing in a tub unattended.
Finally adjust your water heater to below 120 degrees to prevent the danger of scalding.
