First, it was the guy who got ticketed for wearing a Speedo at a beach (of all places). Now, city leaders in Kanab, Utah (the community sits just north of the Arizona state line) are banning bikinis at area pools.
Perhaps it would be best if we all just tanned in our own backyards from now on.
Actually, the ban on bikinis at Kanab’s municipal pool has been around for a while… long enough for two-piece swimsuit fans to raise a stink strong enough for city leaders to reconsider the prohibition on the popular pool attire.
The city council member who recommended the ban said the rule to outlaw bikinis was simply “an oversight.” At the council’s meeting last week she recommended a new rule be put into place revising the ban to include thongs and string bikinis only. In doing so the pool in Kanab would still require G-rated swimwear, but exclude the controversial G-string.
While Kanab has a reputation for being one of the state’s more conservative communities, city leaders say they didn’t mean to cause such an uproar with their bikini ban.
“We were so engrossed with safety and health issues we overlooked the wording,” one city council member said. “We are addressing that now by amending the policy.”
According to news reports, as it stands now, bikinis that don’t reveal too much will be allowed, as will Speedos for men (note to Beach Bob) when the community’s new public pool – known as the Cowboy Water’n Hole – opens July 4th.
Despite the revisions many in the tight-knit community say the negative publicity the ban generated will likely linger for a while. This from a city where council members successfully passed a resolution in 2006 to favor the “natural family” consisting of a working husband, a stay-at-home wife and a “full quiver of children.” (That rule reportedly neglected to raise a single eyebrow.)
