If you need someplace to start in your decluttering, you might want to pick a bathroom. Usually the bathroom is an easy room to attack. Plus, since many medicines and cosmetics are kept here, decluttering the bathroom can also be very good for your health and the health of your family!
Start with the easiest stuff, the half open bottles of shampoo and conditioner, the hair spray that you used once, the various potions and lotions and creams that got pushed to the back of the cabinet, drawer, or shelf.
Next, attack any make up that might be in the bathroom. Most make up should be replaced after a year, even if you only used it once. Mascara should be tossed after just three months. There is a lot of bacteria that can grow in mascara. If you aren’t sure how old it is, it is best to toss it.
Medicine is another easy toss. Get rid of any prescription medicine that you are not actively using. It is never a good idea to reuse a prescription, but best to get a new prescription for a new ailment.
Also toss anything over the counter that is past its expiration date. The effectiveness of medication is not guaranteed after the past due date.
You may come across items that are still good or not opened, but if you have had them for a while, consider getting rid of them anyway to keep the clutter down. If you bought them a long time ago but never got around to using them then chances are that you won’t in the near future. Free those items up to do good, such as at a local shelter or nursing home.
It is okay to keep a couple of backups of often used items, such as soap. Just keep them corralled neatly.
