With temperatures dropping below freezing, it’s an ideal time to talk about keeping that belly warm. As you have probably already figured out, cold drafts are your biggest enemy when it comes to bundling up. A big pregnant belly tends to push out clothing, making it easy for drafts to go up the bottom of your coat or shirt, which is really uncomfortable! Another problem that I personally encountered was a shortage of maternity coats on the market. For some reason I had no problem finding lightweight coats and jackets, but when I tried to find a heavy duty coat to brave the frigid Midwest winters, the selection was very slim. What I was able to find was outside my budget.
The solution to both problems is bundling up in thin layers. The first layer of clothing should ideally be a form fitting, extra long top. Find a stretch long sleeved tee that clings below your belly to block drafts. A pair of maternity pants with a stretch panel that goes up and over your belly is another great way to block those drafts. The second layer could be a sweatshirt or a sweater. I would often wear a sweater or sweatshirt with a hood since my maternity coat did not have one. The third layer is obviously your jacket or coat. Depending on the style of the coat, you may also need a scarf to seal of the neckline. The two best styles for maternity coats are either the extra long (to the mid thigh or knee) or the cinched waist. Both will keep cold air from getting in through the bottom. Extra long coats tend to be a bit dressier while coats with a cinched, elastic waits tend to be more casual. The one you pick really depends on your style and preference.
