In 1 Samuel chapter 17 we can read the story of David and Goliath. Goliath was truly a giant believed to stand about 9 feet tall! He was said to be a man of war even from his youth. One look at him brought on enough fear that many from Israel turned away. The reward for taking on this mighty Philistine was said to be great riches and servitude by their people.
There was a cute young shepherd boy named David. He came forward with great faith to defeat the giant. He is not believed to be older than fourteen years of age at this time. I can just imagine the look on the men’s faces as he appeared to fight. Saul had faith in David even though he was obviously no physical match for Goliath. He allowed David to continue on, clothing him in armor, but it was awkward on him so David went with only a staff and sling in hand. He chose some rocks from a brook. Goliath mocked David for coming at him; a child with pathetic weapons for warfare. David acknowledged he didn’t come in his own strength but that of the God’s. With just a stone and faith, Goliath was struck down by David’s rock in the slingshot right in the forehead that it caused him to die.
Each one of us faces giants of one form or another in our lives. We may face them in our own families, in the workplace, or in our bodies. When you go to battle, do you take a look at the giant and cower away? Do you step forward in faith knowing that the battle isn’t yours alone but may be backed by the power of God?
When God calls our hearts to step forward in faith, rest assured whatever He brings us to, He’ll bring us through. I like to remember the story of this young shepherd boy without the proper tools and how God provided Him with such perfect precision to bring down the biggest giant Goliath.
