Cleaning Upholstery: How and Why

sofa and chairThe upholstery in your home needs your attention just as much as anything else, except for maybe children, pets or in-laws. Here are some hopefully helpful tips on how to maintain your upholstery so that it will actually smile when you approach (and possibly even curtsy if you play your cards right). Read on, if you dare.

Some Precautions
When using any upholstery treatments, it is wise to test a small inconspicuous area first for color fastness. Always check the label for cleaning recommendations. Some fabrics allow cleaning with water, some with water combined with solvents and still others will suggest only vacuuming. (Know what you are dealing with. Then when you walk away, it will mean something.)

Cleaning
Make your own upholstery shampoo by combining ½ cup powdered or liquid detergent, 1-teaspoon ammonia, 1-teaspoon vinegar and a quart of warm water. Mix in a bowl using a hand mixer to create a good froth. Using the froth only, rub lightly with a sponge or cloth over the entire area. Wipe of with either a damp cloth or a wet/dry vacuum. Stay off the sofa, chair or whatever until it is completely dry, no matter how loudly it beckons for you to come and sit down and take a load off.

Vacuum First and Last
Shampooing upholstery will be a lot easier if all the dust is removed first. If while shampooing you discover that there is more wetness than you need, simply vacuum the excess moisture out with a wet/dry vacuum attachment. (If you are anything like me, you would have to find it first; no simple task, but try anyway.)

Pet Hair

Rub off pet hair with a rubber dishwashing glove. The fingers of the glove work well for accessing those awkward areas. You can also use a fabric softener sheet in the same manner or in a pinch, a cloth dampened with a little water.
