Many of my friends who are also working parents are scrambling right now to get child care. Stay at home parents are scrambling to figure out what to do with the kids. A combination of half days off and full days off is throwing everyone off of schedule. And with the big holidays coming, things are going to get even more confusing.
If you can do a little preparation now, your household will be in great shape, leaving you to take advantage of the school holidays, so everyone has a great time while they are off. Planning ahead will really reduce the stress.
First, figure out if you will be available on the days that your child is off. Maybe you have all of the days covered, or maybe you can only be available for a few. If you aren’t available for all of it, now is the time to call family and friends and see if they are available to spend time with your children. The grandparents or aunts or uncles may be thrilled to have your kids for some of the time. Or maybe you can schedule some playdates with your child’s close friends for a few hours, and then return the favor.
Make sure to confirm all arrangements at least a week ahead and then again a day ahead.
You’ll also want to be prepared with several different activities for the kids to do. Maybe a date at the movies or a trip to the ice rink or the library might be nice. Perhaps you want to have busy bags or craft kits made up or purchased in advance. There may be a number of fun things to do in your community, from story time to sports and games. Check local sources, and register now, if needed.
