Studying Nature on the Beach

Summer is on the horizon and that means time at the beach for many this year. If you spent the rest of the year doing your nature studies in woods, forests or the backyard then a beach will be a fun change in scenery. It certainly will provide a different landscape that will be full of adventure for you and your little ones. Your nature study does not have to be formal just take in the beauty and examine the world around you.

Take a Walk on the Beach

A walk on the beach is so relaxing. You will not want to ruin the atmosphere of relaxation and peace normally associated with a beach yet you will want to bring a few fun things to explore your environment. Grab a bucket and fill it with a sketch pad, pencil, magnifying glass, binoculars, and maybe a waterproof disposable camera. Make sure you keep some room for seashells and other fun finds.

Things Not to Miss

Shells: Gather as many as possible and get a guide to help you determine the names of the shells. You will also want to sketch some in your nature journal.

Sand play: Building sand castles and other fortresses or dams is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Be deliberate in teaching how to build with the sand, how much water to use to mold the sand, and the feeling and look of sand. You may also want to study the physics behind building sand castles. You can also find a branch or stick and draw pictures or letters in the wet sand.

Rocks and driftwood: You can study the different types of rocks and the driftwood as far how it looks and feels. Incorporate these items in building your sand creations. Remember to sketch them in your nature journal.

Sun: When we think beach we usually think sun. This is a great time to discuss sun rays and sunscreen.
