If you’ve ever crafted with a young child then you know why glitter is often referred to as “devil’s dust.”
Try creating a beach-themed scrapbook layout with a glitter-loving 6-year-old and prepare to be scorched by the fires of Satan’s playground.
I know this from experience.
Today, my daughter decided to put a few personal touches on a beach layout we’ve been making for our travel memory album.
“Let’s use glitter for the sand, Mommy!”
Those may be seven of the most hair-raising words you’ll ever hear as a mother.
Not one to stifle my offspring’s creativity, I allowed her to make merry with her gold colored devil’s dust—after adding photos and a journaling block to the page. When all was said and done I learned that it is not a wise decision to bling out a page design with glitter after adding the photos. In addition, I would suggest having other projects for your child to work on to add to the page if you want to reduce the amount of glitter that ends up, oh, you know… everywhere.
For our beach-themed layout I had my daughter paint some cardstock different shades of blue. Then, we cut the paper into wave shapes. If you have fancy decorative scissors I would suggest using them, otherwise you will have to work some magic with a traditional set, and then layer the cut-outs together to make the waves look like a full-blown ocean.
If you have sand from your backyard sandbox or you brought some home from your last trip to the beach, then consider using it to decorate the bottom of the page, instead of the glitter. However, if your child is obsessed with glitter you could print out clip art of sunglasses, a shovel, a beach bag or a sand pail and outline the edges of each object with the sparkly devil’s dust.
