I have never had to worry about being beautiful. Even at my best moments – a formal event, my wedding – I only pass for acceptable. So when I see beautiful women such as Christie Brinkley and Halle Berry, I think it must be great to be so beautiful and with that beauty comes no worries. Boy, was I wrong.
In case you haven’t heard, Christie Brinkley and her husband of 10 years, Peter Cook, just separated. The appalling reason is why they separated. Married to someone that is no doubt one of the most beautiful women in the world (even at the age of 52), Cook decided to cheat on his wife with a 19 year old girl. How did Christie find out? The girl’s stepfather had reportedly asked him once to stop the affair. Unable to do that, the stepfather confronted Cook at an event which he was attending with Christie and asked him again to stop the affair – in front of Christie. Now a teenage girl has her life thrown into the headlines, a family is split up, and a classic beauty is facing the end of her fourth marriage.
But, it is not the just Uptown Girl who has suffered relationship problems. It has happened to Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry,
Uma Thurman, Denise Richards and possibly even Heather Locklear (although both Denise Richards and Heather’s soon to be ex Richie Sambora deny their affair started before the end of the marriage). Halle Berry had to go through tabloid news about her cheating husband and the subsequent news of his “sexual addiction.” Uma Thurman, an exotic beauty, found out her hubby of five years, Ethan Hawke, was cheating with a Montreal model while filming on location. Hawke denied the accusations, but the couple divorced anyhow. And we all know the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie story.
So why do men cheat on the beautiful women they are married to – women that most men would die for? There may be several reasons. Some psychiatrists say that after years of marriage, the husband may be looking for someone else who finds him exciting and new, as opposed to the wife who may have become comfortable with him over the years. Others say that husbands of very successful celebrity wives may just be tired of not being seen as someone in his own right, but “Mr. Beautiful Actress.” I supposed it could be hard on a man’s ego if the wife is more successful, but it still seems a shame for a marriage to end for that reason – especially in the case of Brinkley where they had children involved. Then there is always the physical distance between successful couples.
I guess we will really never know 100% why some celebrity marriages end. And it almost always seems to be the husband’s fault – or at least that is the way the tabloids play it up.
