Bedroom Redo While Away at Camp

What does a mom do when her teen is away at camp? How about repainting their bedroom?

Several years ago a mom (whose children are now grown) would share stories about her teens going to camp and how she would take advantage of the opportunity to repaint or redo their bedrooms. I always thought that was a good idea.

So last week my daughter went to camp and I did just that, repainted her bedroom. Thankfully she had expressed interest in changing the darker colors that had been in her room to lighter ones.

She even picked out the paint before she left. So that made it easier. And since she didn’t want me going through her things, she finally cleaned up what had been a very, very messy room.

The painting was a bit of a challenge because it wasn’t just the walls (which first required a coat of Kilz). It was her bed. My husband made her loft bed out of wood and it was painted black, so I had to first put Kilz over it and then the lighter colors.

My next challenge was what to do with all her smaller items—jewelry, makeup, pens and pencils, and so on. I ended up hanging a plastic shoe holder underneath her bed. It is one of those clear kinds with pockets to hold everything.

Next, I was looking at her pile of belts, hats and purses…which are usually strewn around the room. I pounded in some nails underneath her bed and hung them up.

It’s hard to say how long her room will stay organized. But I can tell you this; it was a good feeling to know she would be coming home to a brand new bedroom.

It showed that while she was gone, I was thinking about her. So if you have children going off to camp, take advantage of the opportunity to get into their bedroom and paint, clean up and organize.

P.S. She absolutely loves her new look.
