Beginning Charlotte Mason Basics

I have been asked many times how to add in Charlotte Mason basics. Often when we consider changing our method of homeschooling or adding in a new method it seems overwhelming. The following are classic Charlotte Mason activities with a practical application. Once you get the hang of it you will be able to expand and add in your own.

Copywork:

Either what woman having ten pieces of sliver, if she lose on piece, doth not light a candle and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? –Luke 15:8

Narration:

Using the book you are currently reading aloud or a book your child is reading independently, write three questions you would ask if you designed a test for your reading. Looking at things from this perspective can help a student learn more critically.

Spelling:

Let’s take an old school approach and write each word five times each. While writing spelling words out five times each is not exciting it is still an effective tool. Then use each word in a sentence. You can also dictate sentences to your child using the spelling words.

Math:

Dice Day! Gather up as many dice as you can find in as many different shapes, sizes and colors. You can even find printable to make your own cubes for dice. Now, roll two die and add the numbers or subtract or use those as your fraction etc. Another variation is to use the different types of dice as place value. For instance one die represents the ones place, the tens place, even the tenths place…and so on. Then write the number in standard form and expanded form.

Natural Science:

Grab your crayons, chalk, or colored pencils and go to a window in your house. Draw what you see outside the window. Then go outside and on another sheet draw what you see from the ouside looking in!
