Being A Dog

I’ve spent some time thinking about dog philosophy. I’ve read some really cute books written from a dog’s point of view. And all in all, I think I might like being a dog.

  • Dogs are very forgiving. Whether I leave the house for five minutes to walk to the dumpster or five hours to do some shopping, Moose and Lally are always happy to see me. No matter how long I’ve been gone, they greet me as if they haven’t seen me in years. I love coming home to the joyous frenzy! And if I lose my temper and yell at them or give a quick swat on the rump? Five seconds later, all is forgiven and forgotten.
  • Dogs are almost always ready to get up and go. As soon as I sit up to turn off the alarm, Moose and Lally are ready for a walk. If I get up from my desk, they give me a hopeful look — time for a walk? As soon as I put on my shoes, they’re dancing around me at the door (and Moose is barking). They don’t need time to get ready or put on make up or anything. They are ready for any adventure, any time.
  • Dogs get excited about the littlest thing. A shred of fleece from a stuffed animal? Great toy! A taste of chicken from my dinner? Heaven! A car ride around the block? Awesome! My dogs don’t need fancy toys and gadgets to be happy. Moose is just as happy chewing on the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels as he is chomping on a stuffed animal or a rubber toy.
  • Dogs are happy to see everyone. Last night, some friends stopped over to drop off a few things. Moose and Lally were in a frenzy of greeting! People! In the house! It’s great! When we’re out walking, they want to sniff and be petted by everyone we pass on the street. If we pass someone with an open car door, they want to hop right in and go for a ride.
  • Dogs can sleep anywhere. Right now, Moose is flopped on the linoleum — I guess it’s cool on his belly on a hot day. Lally is on the couch. Five minutes from now, one might be on the bed and the other might make a nest out of a blanket I leave on the floor for just that reason. That long walk from the living room to the bedroom is exhausting… I think we need a nap.

Okay, I don’t know if I’d want to be a dog ALL the time. But it might be a nice vacation!
