You never imagined yourself standing where you are today, under the hoop. You wished that someone were videotaping this because if you were asked 10 years ago, this would have never been possible. In fact, it would have been hysterically comical.
In a world filled with pretty clothes, jewelry, and make-up your world does an about face one day. The next thing you know you are standing there in jeans and a tee shirt with sweat dripping down your face trying to shoot a 3-pointer. The neighborhood boys stand alongside your son watching and cheering you on. You have now entered something similar to “The Twilight Zone” for you. It is called your son’s world.
Some of you have gone from your former self to the “never before athletic, turned sports” mom. As your son grows you will no longer be in need of your contribution as part of the entertainment committee/substitute player, but you know what? You will probably miss it.
Being a single parent will entail doing things that you have never done before. There will be situations to handle that you never thought that you would have to encounter. It takes guts, but you have them. Be strong and be up to the challenge. Embrace it. You are a single parent now and you have no choice, but to face the music. Do it in the best way you know how with one foot in front of the other and a stiff, upper lip.
If you think that this could not happen to you…it just might. Never say never. If it does, you might find that you are even enjoying this little part of your son’s world. Enjoy it while you can. They grow up very quickly. This moment may never come again.
