Being Part of Luther’s Legacy

If you are looking for unique holiday gifts to give friends or relatives who loved Luther Vandross I have good news for you. The legendary singer, who died in 2005 at 54, lived large and now his prized possessions are going on sale. Which means not only can you listen to the award-winning crooner in the confines of your own home, you now have the chance to wear one of his diamond watches while you do so.

Diamond watches, Picasso charcoal drawings, mink coats, crystal vases, and about 1,000 other items previously owned by the singing superstar are going up on the auction block next week. Vandross’ estate auction will also include his handwritten lyrics to “Love Forgot”; the army green thermoses from which he sipped hot tea during his concerts; designer loafers and boots; Lalique crystal vases, glasses and doorknobs.

The items you will be able to bid on were taken from the singer’s former homes in Beverly Hills, California; Greenwich, Connecticut; and an apartment in New York City. The collection is valued between $600,000 and $800,000, according to auction experts.

Some of the most notable items include a mink-lined chair, a silver Piaget diamond-encrusted watch, a silver diamond-encrusted tennis bracelet and a 4-carat diamond ring. In addition to his personal items, Vandross’ touring and music memorabilia will also be up for bid, including a record from David Bowie’s “Young American,” on which Vandross sang background and a double platinum certification of “Dance With My Father.”

Then there are the “everyday items” that Vandross used when he was not on tour. Items such as place settings, serving dishes, wine goblets, and champagne flutes– all with brand names like Tiffany, Baccarat, and Lalique. There are also art deco items, Versace coats, and art geodes.

If you have the means (or simply the unabashed drive) to bid on the aforementioned items, the auction takes place next Wednesday and Thursday in Morris Plains, New Jersey.
