Being Polite At 35,000 Feet (It’s Really NOT That Hard)

Can’t we all just get along? Following the recent incidents involving rude airline passengers and ruder flight attendants, one is left to question whether airplanes are carrying any travelers who are not disgruntled. Which is not to say that most peeved passengers don’t have a right to be, especially when they have to endure record-breaking delays, a less than patient flight crew and countless airline lavatories that simply don’t work.

But, as we head into the last long weekend of the summer season, perhaps, we could commence a moratorium on travel-related complaints and practice some common courtesy.

For example:

· Don’t be an armrest hog.

· Keep your shoes on during the ENTIRE flight. Let’s face it; we are traveling in a confined space and regardless of if you are wearing socks no one wants to be forced to smell someone else’s feet.

· Don’t bring foods with intense odors on a plane. And if you do, eat the offensive smelling dish as soon as possible so others don’t have to suffer through a flight gagging on the smell.

· If you notice a very tall person sitting behind you, think twice about reclining your seat.

· Sit in your assigned seat. Don’t assume just because the airline couldn’t book you and your BFF in adjacent seats that the seat’s rightful owner is going to want to switch with you.

· If you are see a parent traveling with children cut them some slack. Believe me; most parents are just as (if not more) concerned about their children disrupting your flight than you.

· When you are getting up from or into your seat, do not grab the seat in front of you for assistance.

· Have mercy on the person sitting in the dreaded middle seat.

· Don’t stand and chat with other passengers in the aisle, especially when the movie is playing.

Can you think of any other rules of courtesy travelers should practice during a flight?
