“My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me.”
~-Henry Ford-~
Some people have human best friends, and I’m lucky to have a couple of those as well, but I also have Murphy, Kitty, and Tabby.
Many times people don’t get how Murph, Mr. Meow, and Tab are not just pets to me, they’re like my children. Those same people also think I’m nuts that I consider Murph, Tab, and Mr. Meow my best friends too. But that’s what they are.
Just as I cherish certain qualities in my human best friends, so do I cherish certain traits in my four-legged BFFs.
“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog, it’s too dark to read.” ~-Groucho Marx-~
Murph
Murph is the epitome of a dog: he’s truly a human’s best friend. He’s loyal, he’s always by my side, and when he’s not he’s unhappy that he can’t be.
He’s there to lick up my tears, his shoulders never sag under any burden I share with him, and he’s always ecstatic to see me and sad when I have to go. If there was a place like Build-A-Bear for best friends, a kinder, gentler soul I could not create. He lifts me up when I’m down and is the best kind of friend to celebrate with when I have occasion for joy.
Mr. Meow
Mr. Meow’s the kind of best friend who makes me see life through a very different set of bi-focals than the ones I’d normally wear. He puts things in perspective –-usually with an abundance of sarcasm.
He’s the kind of friend who it takes a lot to impress. Few things fluster him or send him into a tizzy. He’s discriminating in his choices because he doesn’t expect to be impressed by everyone and he sure as heck doesn’t have any intention of trying to impress anyone. He is who he is and you either take it or leave it.
He reminds me that I shouldn’t be expected –-by myself or others—- to be everything to everyone at all times. There’s only one person I should worry about satisfying and that’s myself.
“The cat could very well be man’s best friend but would never stoop to admitting it.” ~-Doug Larson-~
Tabby
Tab’s the kind of best friend who turns anything –-and I mean anything– into a fun adventure. She’s lighthearted, always up for excitement, curious to experience everything she possibly can and seeks only to make the most of it.
She’s silly and not afraid to show it. She doesn’t care what people think or if they’re laughing at her because she’s laughing right along with them. Like Mr. Meow, few things rile her because she refuses to see the negative. She’s all about living in the moment and making the best of that.
She’s the kind of friend you seek for a pick me up –and she never lets you down in her attempts to bring you up.
They may be furry, and they may have three different approaches to life and friendship, but better friends I’ve never had.
