According to American Food Holidays website, September is Better Breakfast Month. I think someone make this month for me. Anyone who has read my articles enough will know that I have a strong dislike for breakfast. Waking up and eating in the morning does not lure me out of bed. Perhaps a hot cup of coffee followed by a bagel with cream cheese or a cream filled donut would get me out of bed. So much was wrong with that statement. Sugar is not the best way to start the day. I grew up on Pop Tarts for breakfast. Before you chastise my mom, it was the only thing I would eat. I have a stronger dislike for eggs than breakfast in general. Over the years I have learned nothing. I still have difficulty eating properly at breakfast. However, I can tell you as someone who has gained, lost and gained weight, the time I lost the most and felt the best was when I forced breakfast down my throat. So, maybe I will heed this month’s call for a better breakfast.
To help you have a better breakfast here are some tips for healthy breakfast alternatives:
Ditch the donut: Need I say more? Everyone knows donuts are not fuel for the body. Do not start out your day on pure sugar. Your body is in need of protein not an insulin boost.
Bacon: You can choose turkey bacon over pork if you have an aversion to pork. However, bacon gets a bad rap. It contains protein and no sugar. Yes, it is high in fat. However, if you eat low sodium bacon, dab off the grease, and eat your proper portion you can have bacon in the morning. Moderation is key with bacon.
Egg Substitute: Eggs are not evil. You can have a proper portion of egg and it will not disturb your diet. Eggs are a great source of protein. However, they are also high in cholesterol. If you want the protein but not fat chose egg substitute for your breakfast. Mix in part substitute and part egg in your scrambled eggs or omelet to cut down on fat.
The most important thing is to cut out the sugar and eat something to get you going in the morning. If you need to have leftover dinner for breakfast go ahead! Breakfast is not confined to eggs and bacon.
