Better than Energy Drinks

I feel like I’m seeing a LOT of commercials for energy drinks on television lately. But I’ll be honest: energy drinks scare me a little. I imagine that they’re full of sugar or caffeine, or both — giving you a quick jolt of energy, sure, but in the long run, probably not that great for your health.

But I do suffer from that mid-afternoon slump. Around two o’clock, I start to slow down and think about napping. I suspect it might be a hold-over from my radio days, when I’d get off the air at two and it would be time for a break before dealing with other work. Or maybe it’s just that my daily rhythm is set for a slow-down in the middle of the afternoon.

I know I’m not alone in the mid-afternoon slump.

But if you don’t want to turn to energy drinks, sugary snacks, or caffeine-laden drinks, what can you do to maintain steady energy throughout the day?

* Try adjusting your routine. If your body needs a break at two, maybe you could take a later lunch? Be productive while feelings of alertness and concentration last, and take your break later in the day when your body actually wants it.

* Make sure you’re getting enough rest. Sticking to a bedtime and morning routine can help keep your circadian rhythms running smoothly!

* Try light therapy — especially if you don’t work near a window. A little daylight (or a daylight spectrum light bulb) can help boost your mood and energy levels. Get some outside time (don’t forget the sunscreen) and recharge your batteries!

* Make sure your body is getting the right fuel. Coffee and sugar only goes so far in fueling your body. Eating regular, balanced meals — including breakfast — can help you maintain energy throughout the day.

* Stress can sap your energy, too. Make time to blow off steam — even if you just steal away for a few quiet minutes to yourself after a stressful situation.

* Try things that boost your mood and you might find yourself feeling more energetic. Listen to upbeat music, look at some pictures of family and friends, or find something to laugh about — you might find that the mood boost gives you an energy boost, too!

* On days when I know I’ll want a little more energy — maybe I’m at a conference, or just have a busy schedule — I take a B complex vitamin in the morning.
