Gleaming Glassware: A New Twilight

glassesGlasses take a beating in our homes even if they live long enough to commiserate with their brethren in misery, the pots and pans. Stains can take their toll on even the finest glassware and the campaign to wage war against them must be subtle and swift. Read on for some battle details. Reinforcements will not be arriving anytime soon.

Removing Stubborn Stains
Soaking your glasses in a solution of one part salt and eight parts vinegar will often eliminate stubborn stains and discolorations. If that doesn’t work, try soaking in some ammonia for an hour or so. (Not you personally; your glasses.) If those stains and discolorations are still clinging to life, try a solution of two tablespoons water softener and warm water.

If the problem concerns scratches rather than stains, buy some iron oxide from your jeweler, which is also called jeweler’s polishing rouge. Mix equal parts oxide, glycerin and water and apply the paste to the area with a cloth. Rinse off well with dish soap and warm water. If a white film, like an unwelcome mist, lives over your glasses, try laying some wet potato peels over them for about 8 hours or overnight.

Rinse the next day with clean warm water (and take some aspirin and call the doctor in the morning).

Many Glasses To Clean at Once
Just had a party and everyone has left? Well if you can’t move to a new address, which might be the logical thing to do next, you might as well begin to cleanup. Fill your sink with water as hot as the glasses can stand and add dish soap. Fill another sink (or a pail if you don’t have another one) with hot water only. Using rubber dish-washing gloves, hold each glass, mouth down and plunge it up and down several times in the soapy water. Immediately afterwards, repeat the process in the clean water. This is a quick and easy way to clean many glasses within a short period of time. (Still, you might want to think twice before hosting another large party again.)

Happy glasses to all and to all a good…whatever!
