Bible Stories: Christ’s Birth

The story of the birth of Christ is one of the stories in the Bible that everyone thinks they are familiar with. However, the story of the birth of Christ is often taught wrong. The birth of Christ (and the events soon after) is found in Matthew chapter one through chapter two.

For this lesson, I encourage you to look at the other gospel account (Luke) which details the story to teach your child the complete account of Christ’s birth. I encourage you to read the story completely for yourself before beginning to teach your child, because there are a lot of misconceptions about the story of the birth of Christ. For instance, does the Bible say there were three wise men who came to visit Christ? Does the Bible say that the wise men came to Jesus while He was in the manger? Does the Bible say Christ was born on December 25? Remind yourself what is fact and what is fiction regarding the story of His birth.

I would begin teaching the birth of Christ by talking about his mother and earthly father. Look back at the genealogy of Christ given in Matthew chapter 1. Pick key figures, such as Abraham, Isaac, and David, and remind your children who those people are. Explain that those people from the Old Testament are part of Christ’s family. This can be an excellent way for you to tie the Old Testament and the New Testament together for your children.

Finally, teach your children the details about Christ’s birth. Explain to them that Christ was promised by God along time before He was born to Mary and Joseph. Teach your children that God told Joseph what to name Jesus, and explain the significance of those names (Jesus and Immanuel). This story is very interesting to children because it is one Bible story which is often heard in the world (although it is often taught wrong). Make sure your children know the whole, true, complete story of Christ’s birth.
