Bible Stories to Share with Your Children: Families Reunited

In the last segment I wrote about Joseph’s life, Joseph was put in a place of prominence by Pharaoh in Egypt. Joseph found favor with Pharaoh because Joseph (through the Lord) interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams which had greatly troubled Pharaoh.

Beginning in Genesis 41:47, the Bible speaks of the seven years of abundance within the land of Egypt in which Joseph directed the storage of grain. Then, beginning in Genesis 41:53, the Bible speaks of the seven years of famine which afflicted the land. People from all lands came to Joseph to buy grain which Joseph had stored during the seven years of plenty.

In Genesis 42:1 the Bible states that Jacob sends all but one of his sons (Joseph’s brothers) to buy grain in Egypt. When his brothers appear to him, Joseph recognizes them; however, his brothers do not recognize him. Throughout the next few chapters, the Bible describes the events of Joseph’s revealing himself to his brothers. Amazingly, Joseph does not deal harshly with his brothers after he reveals himself to them. Instead, he makes the wise statement in Genesis 45:5: “And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life.” In Genesis 45:7-11 Joseph brings his family to dwell in the land of Egypt with him.

There are several wonderful points to bring out to children from the story. First, Joseph gives God the glory. In Genesis 45:8, Joseph points out that it was God who brought him to Egypt and that it was God who gave him a high place in Egypt. Joseph could have easily boasted in how he brought himself to that position; however, he clearly gives the glory to God. Secondly, I think that Joseph’s attitude towards his brothers ought to be explained to children. Joseph could have been so angry towards his brothers that he refused to help them in their need. However, he took the right attitude, and helped his family. I think this would be a great story to use to help explain how siblings should act toward one another.

What other lessons do you think can be drawn from the reuniting of Joseph with his family?
